Moose One of the most important foods to the native peoples is the moose. When they kill a moose every part is used. Meaning that the hide is used for clothing, such as gloves, mittens, coats, and dresses. They used the hide for almost everything. Moose hide is a good material for such things because of it's able to withstand the hard work the people do and it is warm enough for the very cold temperatures in Alaska. The hide is also not oily like cow hide.
There wasn't always moose around for the native people to hunt. The moose were not real abundant. They usually depended on a more reliable animals, such as the caribou.
Hunting moose was difficult for them. During the summer the people had to hunt on foot. They had no planes to take them to a well know moose hunting area. They did however have canoes and such to take them up and down the rivers and creeks. During the winter they would hunt by dog sled. Both ways were very difficult in comparison to the methods used today.
